Blog Post at Hip Hop Cheerleader

"If you plan on getting raped, you better be white. & if you can’t manage that. You better ask your rapist to be stranger, someone who you weren’t in a relationship with, or out on a date with, or someone who you had sex with before. And you better not be a sex worker. Because sex workers cant be raped. Just so you know. You better be wearing long black clothes, be married, and be from a wealthy family. Make sure you are a virgin too. It would help also, if you were light skinned. if you had long hair. if you were thin. Dark skin marks you as a ho. As hypersexual. As undeserving of protection, autonomy, and bodily protection. Your rape doesn’t count. It would be good if you would keep this in mind."

New national plan to prevent child sexual abuse and exploitation

http://preventconnect.org/2012/03/new-national-plan-to-prevent-child-sexual-abuse-and-exploitation/

African-American Survivors of CSA Survey

A member of gen5's community, Eb Brown, is doing research and telling the stories of African American survivors of child sexual abuse. Eb's work looks at disclosure and community based interventions in African American/Black communities. Please support their work by participating in a) an annoymous online survey and/or b) a one-on-one interview.    To fill out the survey visit:   http://tellingourstoriestogether.wordpress.com/ or email Eb at AfricanAmericanCSA@yahoo.com to schedule an interview or for more information.   Eb's work is based on the fact that the state (police, child welfare, etc.) is NOT the answer to what is needed to prevent, intervene and provide a space to heal from CSA. Communities, families and individuals are the KEY and this is the first step in a broader vision!

Can an Advocate be excluded from a SART interview?

Here are the bullets of CALCASA's response:

- When a victim elects to have a 'victim advocate' present, that person cannot be excluded from the interview. A 'victim advocate' is specifically defined as a sexual assault counselor, as defined in Section 1035.2 of the Evidence Code, or a victim advocate working in a center established under Article 2 (commencing with Section 13835) of Chapter 4 of Title 6 of Part 4.
- 'Victim advocates' are 1) trained in assisting and counseling victims of sexual assault and 2) are engaged in the work of providing guidance and assistance to such victims, either at rape crisis centers of through nonprofit agencies dedicated to helping victims and witnesses of crime.
- A 'support person' CAN be excluded if officials determine that the support person's presence "would be detrimental to the purpose of the interview". This is support person is NOT a certified 'victim advocate'. On page 5 of this document, 'support person' is defined in depth but essentially, a 'support person' is neither required nor expected to bring any special training, credentials, or expertise to the proceeding.
- A 'support person' could be excluded if their "presence operates either to further traumatize the victim or to other side disrupt the interview process, thereby impeding law enforcement efforts to identify and apprehend wrong doers".
