Non Certified Volunteer Projects:
  • Call Lola of North Beach 415-781-1817 ask for Ivan Nanola
    • Request more stationary: blank, thank you, birthday(bday low priority).
    • Go pick it up and bring it to the office when it’s ready.
  • Call Lush 415-921-5874 the guy who works there hooks us up every year.
    • Request a donation of up to 75 bath bombs or soaps or whatever they can give. Needed by Valentines Day 2010
    • If they have something to offer soon, pick up and bring back to office when it’s ready.
  • Cut out leaves for training tree. Ask Teresa or Evelyn where the leaves are.
  • Outreach for January training.
    • Print posters. Cut the info strips. Careful they often don’t line up when you try to cut multiple at once.
    • Print ¼ page flyers, cut them up with the paper cutter.
    • Put up posters, hand out fliers.
    • For posters, esp hit TWB: all women bathroom doors at eye height when people are sitting on the toilet, 1 in elevator, front door of building, elevator door(the ones that are propped open) on each floor.
    • Target the 5 prioritized communities: marginally housed or homeless women, immigrant women, formerly incarcerated women, young women (20 and under), trans and queer women of color.
  • Contact local shops and get $5 and $10 gift cards. No chains. Places where you *could* buy something for $5 or $10. Think: books, groceries, self care(ie: sage, etc…), ice cream, music, video rental, guest passes to a gym or pool, movie theater ($10), game store (just awesome, mention Isaak), (peasant pies), arts/crafts places (flax)
    • We go through a ton of these every year so try to get 80+ of these certificates.
  • Volunteer Archive Cabinet:
    • Files are currently in 2 drawers, spread it out down into the drawer beneath as well.
    • Re-label all of the volunteer folders: color code labels alphabetically:
      • Ie: A: pink, B: orange, C: blue, D: green… then cycle back through the colors for the next 4 letters.
      • Label each hanging file folder with a colored tab that says the letter that the folder contains. Ie: “A” highlighted pink to keep with the color scheme.
    • Alphabetize all of the volunteer files into these files by last name.
      • Ie: Macedo comes before Martyny… Please don’t just put all the A’s together. Organize files within each letter alphabetically as well.
  • Got experience with design? Design our new blog. Similar to our main site in color scheme, but with a volunteer program twist. Contact Teresa for support.

Tabling For Sins Invalid

We need help with tabling and onsite counseling for audience members at this year’s Sins Invalid.  This is an amazing evening of performance and a great opportunity to earn some hours. Folks who table will be able to watch the show (I’m still checking about the availability of seating).  NOTE:  Please arrive approximately 30 minutes before your shift to set up informational materials.

Please contact Amal as soon as possible if you are interested in tabling at 415-861-2024 x 309 or email amalkouttab@sfwar.org

Recruiting Storytellers

SFWAR is collaborating with the Oakland-based non-profit Creative Interventions and the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Mills College to support the STORY-TELLING and ORGANIZING PROJECT (STOP), in which we collect stories about how individuals heal from, and/or find justice after, surviving intimate forms of violence. The stories are also being collected to publish an SFWAR chapbook that will serve as a resource to help other survivors and their communities find their own paths toward healing and justice in their recovery.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE YOUR OWN HEALING/JUSTICE STORY?

YOU WILL RECEIVE $20 TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROJECT

To be eligible to participate in the project, you must meet the following criteria:

** You must self-identify as someone who is a survivor from an intimate form of violence and be open to telling your story about how you are healing from the experience

** You must be willing to be interviewed once in person for 1 hour at the SFWAR office, in your home, or somewhere else where you are comfortable between October 6 and 21, 2009. A half-hour follow-up interview will also be conducted.

** You must be willing to sign an informed consent form that allows us to tape record the interview (you will be given control to strike anything from the record that you wish as well as a range of options for possible use of your recording)

If you are interested in participating in the STOP collaboration, please confirm by October 1, 2009 by contacting Amal Kouttab, Community Initiatives Director, SFWAR, at 415-861-2024 or by e-mail: akouttab@sfwar.org  We look forward to hearing from you!
