Shame and White Allyship to People of Color

Guilt and shame are common issues for white people seeking to acknowledge and address racism. White people’s shame about racism often shows up as behaviors that reinforce racist dynamics, including denial, defensiveness, passivity and self-absorption, the calling out of which often serves to deepen shame and limit white people’s receptivity. How can we respond with compassion to this shame without condoning the resulting racist dynamics?

On December 5, Vanissar Tarakali will offer a workshop that brings theory and embodied practice together to explore white people’s automatic, shame-coping behaviors, and offers insights into why certain racist behaviors are so entrenched, even in well-intentioned white people.

This workshop, which draws on over a decade of research into the psychology of how white people unlearn racism, will benefit white allies seeking to strengthen mutual support and compassion for everyone working to transform racism. People of color seeking to interact with white anti-racist allies without caretaking may also benefit from attending. This workshop will help everyone recognize when white racial shame is operating and offer options and antidotes to support white allyship and accountability.

Sia Amma is out of Africa. She is a stand-up comedian, writer, dancer, and actress who is best known as Africa's most outrageous, hysterical, and inspiring comedienne. She is well known for making fun of African and American cultures, relationships, life experiences, sexuality and, of course, herself. She has given presentations that combine humor and celebration that are refreshing, honest, and very informative about the issue of female circumcision, and she has drawn great reviews at major colleges, universities, and around the country. Sia Amma performs her stand-up comedy material three times a week at Our Little Comedy Club in San Francisco. Her newest presentation for mothers and daughters is called "What Mama Said About 'Down There'."

Brooklyn-based comedian, actress and educator, Micia Mosely is a founding artist with Nursha Project; a group committed to supporting artists and projects rooted in socio-political offerings. Since earning her Ph.D. in education from U.C. Berkeley, Micia has shared her comedic performance in cities all over the United States including, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Boston, Washington D.C. and Honolulu. In 2009, her one woman show "Where My Girls At?" was nominated for a New York Innovative Theater Award for best solo performance.

Native San Franciscan Ali Wong is a local legend. SF Weekly selected her as the "Best Comedian of 2009" and the SF Bay Guardian awarded her a "Best of the Bay" title. In March 2009, she moved to NYC and will be producing a one-day music festival in LA, summer of 2010.

Kristina Wong is a nationally presented solo performer, writer, actor, educator, culture jammer, and filmmaker. Described by the East Bay Express as "brutal but hilarious... a woman who takes life's absurdities very seriously," her body of performance work includes short and full-length solo performance works, outrageous street theater stunts and pranks, subversive internet installations, and plays and sketch comedy. She was awarded the Creative Capital Award in Theater and a Creation Fund from the National Performance Network to create her third full-length solo show, "Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" exploring the remarkably high incidence of suicide among Asian American women in a world that's more nuts than we are. She is a freelance contributor to anthologies and magazines like Playgirl Magazine.

Teen Dating Violence Prevention Symposium

This symposium will be aimed at educating high school students in San Francisco about the issue of teen dating violence and healthy and unhealthy relationships. The goals of this symposium are to talk to youth about teen dating violence and what constitutes a healthy and unhealthy relationship; to assess the interest of the youth involved in participating in peer educator training programs in their communities; and to develop an alliance among community based organizations to train high school students as peer educators on this subject. We are also working with the school district to create a way for these youth to educate their peers on healthy dating behavior.

Another World is Possible: Visionary Politics

~Please do not forward: SFWAR volunteers may let them know you were invited by Teresa Martyny~

Sunday October 18th

3-5 pm at the Humanist Hall

390 27th Street, Oakland between Telegraph and Broadway.

We hope you can join us for this panel discussion with Rachel Herzing from Critical Resistance and Creative Interventions, Michelle Mascarenhas-Swan from Movement Generation Justice & Ecology Project, Sara Kershnar from the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network and Chela Delgado from INCITE: Women of Color Against Violence. The panelists will be discussing visionary politics for our movements based in the work of their organizations.

Visionary politics are political frames that invite us to imagine and create a world organized and operated by values of justice, cooperation, and liberation. This panel will focus on ways that social justice organizations balance addressing the urgency of organizing against oppressive forces and their immediate impacts on people's lives with building sustainable alternative institutions and practices in line with their alternative visions for the world. Panelists will also discuss ways that their organizations balance fighting for concrete wins and advances in the world with transforming the process and culture of how that organizing happens.

The Anne Braden Program is a four-month intensive anti-racist organizing training for white social justice activists. The program combines workshops, mentorship, and volunteer placements at local racial and economic justice organizations, in an effort to develop white anti-racist leadership to build support for racial justice in white communities and help build powerful multiracial movements for collective liberation.

Open sessions of the Anne Braden Program provide an opportunity for participants to invite friends and family to join them in their learning process. While the Anne Braden Program is designed for white social justice activists, the open sessions welcome guests of all backgrounds. The open sessions are an opportunity for Anne Braden Program mentors, site supervisors, volunteers and allies to participate in the program. These sessions are a space for us to come together and learn as a larger community.

Following the panel, all guests are welcome to continue the conversation with Catalyst volunteer facilitators at a Guest Discussion space from 5-7pm. We will help coordinate car pooling to get to the location. Food will be provided.

Due to space restrictions we have to limit the number of people we can invite. Please feel free to invite a few people you'd like to bring, but please don't forward this out widely. If you would like childcare or ASL please let us know by Tuesday October 13th.

If you plan to attend this open session, please RSVP to Chris Crass at chris@collectiveliberation.org.

Grief Ritual: A Daylong Workshop for People of Color

Grief Ritual: A Daylong Workshop for People of Color
Sunday, November 1, 2009

with Sobonfu Somé, Spring Washam

Date: Sunday, November 1, 2009
Time: 9:30 am - 5:00 pm
Cost: Cost $25 - $55, sliding scale, plus a donation to the teacher(s)
Location: Community Meditation Hall

This daylong for People of Color is a transformational and soul-invigorating workshop designed to break through our cultural barriers of grief. There is a need to periodically feel and express grief in order to purge the soul from hurts and pains. The interdiction and suppression of emotion in general, and grief in particular, has recently been linked to the general sense of spiritual drought, emotional confusion and certain illnesses we experience in our life. To begin to regain a serious and lasting sense of connectedness with ourselves and with spirit, we need to find a proper place to release our grief -- grief about all the losses we have endured in this lifetime, the loss of loved ones, the loss of our dreams and the loss of our connection with our ancestors.

In the traditional world of the Dagara of Burkina Faso West Africa, the ritual of grief, conducted almost daily in different parts of the tribe, is the Dagara people's way of releasing the tension caused by loss, and to restore continuity in their relationships. We will enter into the ritual space of grief following the traditional model of the Dagara. It is our hope that it brings a deep sense of release, peace and connectedness in your life.

R.I.P Gina Hotta

http://www.racewire.org/archives/2009/10/rip_gina_hotta.html

We lost another extraordinary Asian American community leader this past Monday. Gina Hotta passed away of a heart attack Monday night.
An Asian American activist raised in the Bay Area, she was fighting up until the UC walk-outs last week. She is probably best known for her work on Apex Express. Every week or so, awaiting in my email inbox, would be a thoughtful subject line ranging from human trafficking to tabla musicians. She brought together so many different issues and people into a one hour radio show. To me, she represented the type of woman I aspire to become—a life filled with dope music, loving people and political savvy. Her voice will truly be missed.
This has been a sad year filled with many losses—Gina Hotta, Ron Takaki, Al Robles and others. Let’s remember and honor them all, and continue fighting with their spirits.
