Want to be a mentor?

Hi all,

We want to extend the opportunity to folks who have been volunteers for over a year to step up as mentors to newer volunteers. We did this informally during the last training group where if a new volunteer took over an older volunteers shift, the older volunteer offered themselves to be available for tips/tricks, info about the shift.

If you are interested in being a mentor in a more general sense, please let Teresa know. We can match you up with one of the new volunteers or with a volunteer coming in with the next training in February.

Thanks!

At 17, Wendy Maldonado looked forward to a storybook
life of wedded bliss with her husband Aaron. Instead, reality soon set in:
Wendy had married an abuser. Four children and 19 years later, Wendy and her
oldest son Randy collaborated to murder Aaron--a crime that was the family's
salvation even as it sent both to jail. This documentary follows Wendy in her
final days of freedom before she begins a ten-year prison sentence for the
crime. Alternately shocking and heartbreaking, the harrowing film tells the
tragic story of one woman's fateful decision to protect her family from abuse
at all costs, even her own freedom. (TV14) (AC,AL,N)

Embody Your Allyship

Embody Your Allyship
Open House
for White Racial Justice Allies

Sunday, December 13
12 noon-3:00 PM in Temescal (North Oakland)

Suggested Donation: $25

Once we know what we are responsible for as white anti-racist allies, why is it often so hard to follow through?
Why, despite our best intentions, do we freeze up when it's time to speak up and educate other white folks, or hold back when it's time to challenge systemic racism? Why do we get defensive when it's time to listen to people of color?

At this Open House, we will learn about how an embodied approach to allyship can support creative & connected racial justice responses when we find ourselves off balance. We will discuss individual and collective blocks to effective white racial justice action. Participants will also learn some simple, effective tools that support practical white allyship.

CUAV's Safety Lab

Bay Area: Join CUAV for our first Safety Lab!

WHEN: 12/8 7:00pm-9:00pm (food at 6:30pm)

WHERE: CUAV - 170 A Capp Street, San Francisco (take BART to 16th Street Mission)

WHAT: Let's practice what we want to see in the world! Using scenarios of violence in our communities, we will work together to create and act out new ways of responding to anti-LGBTSTGNC hate violence that can create true safety, accountability, and healing. CUAV will host regular Safety Labs to offer a space to practice community responses to different forms of violence. This first Safety Lab is co-sponsored by the El/La Program Para TransLatinas in San Francisco.

HOW: RSVP to stacy@cuav.org or call (415) 777-5500 x316. Interpretation available.

We are mourning the tragic deaths of 15-year-old African American Jaysen Mattison in Baltimore and 19-year-old Puerto Rican Jorge Steven López Mercado in Puerto Rico, and the countless others we have lost to hate violence. Our sorrow and outrage go out to their families and communities: we know Jaysen and Jorge were taken from you too soon. We recognize that there is a war against low-income, immigrant, and LGBTSTGNC (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two- Spirit, Trans, and Gender Non-Conforming) People of Color, and that our people are meeting early deaths at the hands of hatred, abuse, neglect, and oppression.

Unfortunately, the recent passing of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, the nation’s first ever federal LGBTSTGNC-inclusive hate crimes bill, will not stop the violence we face. The bill:

• Provides no funding or resources to actually prevent violence, but instead gives $5 million to expand the powers of local police and the FBI to investigate and prosecute incidences of hate violence.
• Strengthens a criminal “justice” system that funnels more and more poor people and people of color into prisons and away from our families.
• Supports the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the larger Defense Authorization Act, which allocated $130 billion to military efforts instead of to education, jobs, housing, and healthcare.
• Reaffirms the idea that safety comes through more police and more people in prison, instead of by addressing the real needs of survivors of violence, people who have been violent, and the communities affected.

We believe that we can create our own safety. We desire and demand solutions that challenge the real causes of violence: homophobia, transphobia, and economic injustice. As we demand the basic necessities that we need to survive—jobs, housing, healthcare, and education—we know that we must create real ways for communities to respond to and prevent violence without relying on violent institutions. We refuse to have our pain used to support violence of any kind.

Oakland: Vigil in Honor of Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado

Date:
Sunday, November 22, 2009
Time:
3:30pm - 7:00pm
Location:
The intersection of MacArthur and Lakshore/Grand Ave. Meet underneath the Archway of the Lake Merritt Trail. Right across from the small park..or patch of grass, whatever you want to call it.

Description

Hello Everyone,

On November 14th 19-year old Gay Youth Jorge Lopez Mercado was found murdered in his home city of Puerto Rico. Members of the Bay Area community have organized a Vigil to take place in his memory and honor this Sunday, November 22nd. In addition to silent prayers, there will be a space for people to say a few words, share their own experiences and express frustrations. We will also be honoring other brothers and sisters who have lost their lives to violence, ignorance and hate. Sad to say, I just read a news article of a 15-year old boy by the name of Jason Mattison, also gay, who was murdered in his home only last week. On Sunday we come together to mourn as a community, let our voices be heard and express to the world that this type of violence will not be tolerated. Below are news links just in case anyone hasn't heard the news.

At the Vigil there will be updates on other steps people are taking to further connect our struggles nationwide and to contact the family and friends of in order to see how our community can aid their healing process. Please come if you can and spread the word to your loved ones, friends, neighbors, etc. Bring candles and something to keep warm.

If you do not live in Oakland, and reside somewhere that has yet to set up a vigil, make your presence known!

Much Love,
Macio

Health and Justice Now: California Women of Color Demand Health Care for All

During Saturday’s historic vote on health care reform, the House jeopardized the health and well-being of women with the passage of the Stupak amendment, which would eliminate abortion coverage from both private and public health plans participating in the insurance exchange. The continued fight for affordable and comprehensive health coverage for all must not place women’s health and lives on the negotiating table and leave us worse off. The Senate, and the White House, must now take bold action to stave off further attacks from those wishing to make the health care battle solely about access to abortion.

Low-income women of color and their families, in particular, have much at stake and an urgent need for reform. The current system has created tremendous challenges for us as mothers, sisters and daughters who are the primary coordinators of health care for our families. Consistent, persistent and historical health disparities demand that women of color be front and center on the road to reform.

Job Announcement: Mission Community Council Director

11/5/09

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

After three and a half years of leadership at MiCoCo I have made the decision to move on in pursuit of other opportunities. MiCoCo has been an important part of my life and I continue to believe strongly in the principles and mission for which the organization stands. MiCoCo is at an exciting juncture, with many opportunities for growth and a more targeted direction, and I feel it is the right time for me to transition out. I will remain in my position until March of 2010 to ensure a smooth transition for the new leadership.

New Director Search
MiCoCo's Coordinating Council is launching a search for a new Director. Please see the position announcement attached. We are looking for an outstanding Mission-savvy leader with passion and experience in community building, advocacy, and collaboration. Please share the announcement widely to help us identify the right candidate. We are accepting applications immediately for interviews in December and January, with a desired start date of February 1, 2010.

Developing a Plan for 2010 and Beyond
We are grateful to many of you for your participation in our recent member assessment process. The Coordinating Council and I are taking your feedback into consideration as we work to develop a 2010 work plan for the organization that will focus activities on the most critical needs and issues you identified, and outline needed steps for further development and clarification of MiCoCo's vision and structure. We will share the thinking on 2010 and beyond with members early next year. With your continued support and participation, I am confident that the steps we are outlining will help refocus and move the organization to a more outstanding position.

Transition Process
During this process, I will, of course, continue to coordinate MiCoCo's regular program activities, and I'm fully available to address any questions you might have regarding the transition plan. Coordinating Council members and I are committed to ensuring a smooth transition to new leadership in order to support a strong future for MiCoCo. As you know, each of you is integral to our work in the neighborhood and we will continue to look to you for leadership and support in building a brighter future for the Mission.

I have no doubt that I will continue to be involved in the Mission District and with each of you even after my time at MiCoCo is over. You have all played such an important role in my development and growth as an individual and community member. For that I am eternally grateful.

In the meantime, I am still on board at MiCoCo for several months, so this isn't goodbye yet! As always, please don't hesitate to call or email with any questions or suggestions.

Sincerely,

Emily

SFWAR's Day of the Dead Altar in SF

Women of Color Resource Center Hosts Forum on Richmond Tragedy

Greetings folks,

This is an invitation to both attend and support an upcoming forum on Monday night of next week- 6:30-9:30 pm- at the Women of Color Resource Center in Oakland. We are hosting an open-forum to discuss, make meaning of, and strategize about solutions to address the protections of women, youth, and community members following the tragic rape of a young woman in Richmond last week. We are working to get a facilitator who will join us from a community-based non-violent communication organization which specializes in advocacy for women and girls.

The facilitator comes at a cost of $400 for the evening and we are trying to pull together the funds quickly to be able to hold space for a very important community matter.

Can you please spread the word to friends and colleagues letting them know about this forum, and our need for their urgent support to make sure that the session happens?

Please contact me for more information or if you are able to contribute something. Every little bit will help. The space will be youth friendly as well.

Shame and White Allyship to People of Color

Guilt and shame are common issues for white people seeking to acknowledge and address racism. White people’s shame about racism often shows up as behaviors that reinforce racist dynamics, including denial, defensiveness, passivity and self-absorption, the calling out of which often serves to deepen shame and limit white people’s receptivity. How can we respond with compassion to this shame without condoning the resulting racist dynamics?

On December 5, Vanissar Tarakali will offer a workshop that brings theory and embodied practice together to explore white people’s automatic, shame-coping behaviors, and offers insights into why certain racist behaviors are so entrenched, even in well-intentioned white people.

This workshop, which draws on over a decade of research into the psychology of how white people unlearn racism, will benefit white allies seeking to strengthen mutual support and compassion for everyone working to transform racism. People of color seeking to interact with white anti-racist allies without caretaking may also benefit from attending. This workshop will help everyone recognize when white racial shame is operating and offer options and antidotes to support white allyship and accountability.

Sia Amma is out of Africa. She is a stand-up comedian, writer, dancer, and actress who is best known as Africa's most outrageous, hysterical, and inspiring comedienne. She is well known for making fun of African and American cultures, relationships, life experiences, sexuality and, of course, herself. She has given presentations that combine humor and celebration that are refreshing, honest, and very informative about the issue of female circumcision, and she has drawn great reviews at major colleges, universities, and around the country. Sia Amma performs her stand-up comedy material three times a week at Our Little Comedy Club in San Francisco. Her newest presentation for mothers and daughters is called "What Mama Said About 'Down There'."

Brooklyn-based comedian, actress and educator, Micia Mosely is a founding artist with Nursha Project; a group committed to supporting artists and projects rooted in socio-political offerings. Since earning her Ph.D. in education from U.C. Berkeley, Micia has shared her comedic performance in cities all over the United States including, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Boston, Washington D.C. and Honolulu. In 2009, her one woman show "Where My Girls At?" was nominated for a New York Innovative Theater Award for best solo performance.

Native San Franciscan Ali Wong is a local legend. SF Weekly selected her as the "Best Comedian of 2009" and the SF Bay Guardian awarded her a "Best of the Bay" title. In March 2009, she moved to NYC and will be producing a one-day music festival in LA, summer of 2010.

Kristina Wong is a nationally presented solo performer, writer, actor, educator, culture jammer, and filmmaker. Described by the East Bay Express as "brutal but hilarious... a woman who takes life's absurdities very seriously," her body of performance work includes short and full-length solo performance works, outrageous street theater stunts and pranks, subversive internet installations, and plays and sketch comedy. She was awarded the Creative Capital Award in Theater and a Creation Fund from the National Performance Network to create her third full-length solo show, "Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" exploring the remarkably high incidence of suicide among Asian American women in a world that's more nuts than we are. She is a freelance contributor to anthologies and magazines like Playgirl Magazine.

We are also working with the school district to create a way for these youth to educate their peers on healthy dating behavior.
